Merely responding to the pandemic can give us short-term relief but if we do not learn that we need to change our behavior we are bound to stumble into more pandemics in the future. The Covid-19 pandemic is simply the result of our failure to learn from the past. We treated earlier pandemics as a medical issue that requires a medical response. We conveniently forget that these crises were triggered by our behaviors and attitudes. 

Bioteknologi memang sudah lama dipraktikkan sejak manusia pandai menggunakan mikro-organisma untuk memeram buah-buahan seperti anggur untuk dijadikan arak/alcohol dan cuka. Ia adalah teknologi yang membabitkan penggunaan dan pengolahan organisma-organisma hidup dan atau sebahagian dari komponen dari organisma hidup itu (termasuklah sekecil-kecil molekul DNA yang terhadap di dalam sel organisma itu) untuk menghasilkan produk dan proses yang memberi menafaat kepada manusia. 

The Covid19 pandemic has turned the world upside down. Rich and developed countries like the US, the UK and Russia has proven to be inept at handling the pandemic. The high number of infections and deaths in these countries shows how the national leadership in these countries have failed. These countries may have the best scientists and hospitals, but these cannot compensate for the tragedy of incompetent national leaders.

Di zaman pemerintahan Tun Abdullah Badawi, MOSTI mengorak langkah menggerakkan program Bioteknologi. Maka lahirlah beberapa institusi/badan GLC yang hebat seperti Malaysian Biotech Corp dan National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM). Beberapa projek pembangunan seperti kampus TPM Biotech di Raub di bawah Technology Park Malaysia, pusat penyelidikan NIBM di Serdang dan di Penang, Projek Inno-Bio di Nilai, dan terakhir Projek Bio XCell di Iskandar Putri di Johor siap dibina. Manakala Malaysian Biotech Corp pula melancarkan program BIONEXUS mereka berbekalkan bajet ratusan juta ringgit setahun.
